Minute with the Mayor

Every week, I receive comments and questions about the video series that the city has started to promote our city businesses.  We call it the “Business of the Week” program.  How it started was almost by a chance conversation by our city administrator, Tonya Tindle.

Tonya had mentioned that there were businesses that we needed to go and visit and meet the owners.  From that statement, we decided to begin the process of how the city could not only visit the businesses but to shine a spotlight on them as well.

Tonya and I started looking at some of the older businesses that had been around for many years, and that was the beginning of the Business of the Week video series.  After the choice is made as to what business to visit, we have a certificate that we print off. Tonya and I then meet at the business and surprise the business as we walk in to inform them of the weekly award.

I then take a few pictures of the business, and then Tonya and I make a short video about the business.  The video is then edited, and we develop a short three-to-five-minute video highlighting the business.  We then put the video on our Facebook page so all the city can view if they wish.

One great thing is the partnership with the Sparta Expositor that we joined with to do the Business of the Week.  After our visit and video is released, The Expositor comes behind us and does a human-interest story on that same business.  This gives the business even more exposure.

Tonya and I look forward each week to visiting the business and meeting with the great people of our community.  We are attempting to visit every business in the city limits. It may take us a while, but we will give it our best effort.  Thank you all for the comments, and, if you would like to nominate a business, give the office a call and let them know.

Be safe out there, finish strong.
