Although we do not know the exact date it began, we do know that Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church was established in 1820. It was founded at the arbor of trees called the Old Camp Ground now bordered by Quebeck Road and Horton Road in Quebeck.
A small group of worshippers had begun the arbor church in the Methodist faith after splitting off from worshipping with Baptists at the Keathley Old Campground nearby. Soon, as many as 200 came from many miles to worship, tying their horse-drawn wagons onto tree branches to listen to the services. Four years later, three families moved here from North Carolina and were inspired to build a log church. One family donated 1-1/2 acres inside the arbor for the church to be built on. The acreage was next to the cemetery that was started in 1808 for some Civil War and Revolutionary War veterans. Some of the same trees stand in the same cemetery next to the present day church, containing hundreds of graves.
To build the church, each local family was asked to donate one log for each 10 logs used to build their log homes. The church itself was built by the members. It was finally completed in 1828.
1843, the church was used as Mt. Pisgah School for about 50 students. In 1846, Charles and William Passons started the first Sunday School, in White County, at Mt. Pisgah where 150-250 students attended for the next three years.
As you can see, Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church is rich in history, and the above only tells a little of its heritage. Although COVID-19 has affected our year-long celebration, we still plan to celebrate this milestone sometime in the future and invite you to join us. Of course, you are welcome to join us any Sunday morning at 10 a.m., for Sunday School, and 11 a.m., for worship service, as well as 7 p.m., on Tuesday, for Bible study.
