According to Charlie Tollison, assistant chief of Sparta-White County Rescue Squad and public information officer, at 5:15 p.m., Nov. 30, 2023, White County E-911 paged out a mountain rescue in the Scott’s Gulf/Big Bottom area for a jeep that had overturned, and one occupant could not get out of the vehicle. One person walked out for help but was not able to direct responding units to a pinpoint area for the overturned Jeep. After an hour or more of searching various trails, the Jeep was located. The victim was removed from the wreckage and was transported by the Rescue Squad’s side-by-side to an awaiting air ambulance from Erlanger and transported to the trauma center in Chattanooga.

“Thanks goes out to White County South Group firefighters, White County Emergency Medical Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Lt. Jon Ryan, deputies with White County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee State Parks, Life Force medical helicopter, and the members of the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad,” Tollison said.
