K-9 leashes used to pull stranded kayakers to safety

Two kayakers floating down Calfkiller River last week were rescued by Sparta police officers after they became stranded at the base of the dam.

According to City of Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery, K-9 Officer Justin Cunningham, K-9 Officer Austin Edwards, and Sgt. J.T. King tied K-9 leashes together to reach the stranded kayakers, who were at the base of the dam, with the water flowing over them.

The kayakers, who were uninjured, were pulled to shore by the officers.

Lowery praised the officers for their quick response and ingenuity. Lowery stated he wants to ensure that all police officers have ropes and other such equipment that might be needed for these types of incidents.
