Sales tax referendum defeated

Paul Sherrell re-elected to Tennessee House of Representatives

The highly publicized sales tax referendum on the White County ballot was voted down, with 545 votes in favor and 708 against.

In the race for Tennessee House of Representatives District 43, which includes White and Warren counties, White County election results show newcomer Robert McCormick beat incumbent Paul Sherrell in their home county. McCormick received 1,627, and Sherrell garnered 1,123. In Warren County, McCormick received 894, while Sherrell garnered 1,626. Sherrell will retain his seat as representative for District 43.

School board members: Lisa K. Officer, district 1; Bob Young, district 2; John W. Smith, district 3; Terri Douglas defeated incumbent Dewayne Howard in district 4, with a vote of 176 to 113; and Tracy England Fowler was elected to fill the unexpired term in district 7.

For the City of Sparta, three candidates were to be selected out of four names on the ballot. Hoyt Jones, received 357 votes; Judy Parker Payne, 373; and Brent L. Young, 299. Brian M. Jones garnered 293.
