The White County High School Warriorette basketball team followed up their undefeated opening weekend with a pair of wins at home before breaking for the Thanksgiving holiday.
On Nov. 24, the Warriorettes played host to the DeKalb County Tigers, sending them home with a 70-30 loss. The Warriorettes, who were proud to host a substate game in Roy Sewell Gymnasium last season, quickly reminded the high school basketball world how dominant they are when playing at home. White County took a 49-17 lead into the locker room at halftime before settling down to just score 21 points int he second half.
While all of the Warriorettes got in on the action, it was senior Gracie Clark who led the way going 6-for-9 to put 17 points on the board. Clark also pulled down six rebounds and had four steals to improve her early season average to more than 2 steals per game. Joining Clark in double digit scoring were Kylie Norris and Bella Winningham. Norris made all six of her shots to put 14 points on White County’s side of the scoreboard while Winningham added another 12. Ashlyn Selby scored nine points and Kaylee Sanders had six. Sophomore Saydee Carpenter added four points to the Warriorettes total while Cassidy Reed added three more. Sarah Peek and Lakelyn Grasty each sank one shot while Kyra Fox added a single point from the foul line to round out White County’s scoring Monday night.
The Warriorettes were dominant on the boards all night, pulling down 38 rebounds as a team with Ashlyn Selby leading the way with nine herself. White County had 15 offensive rebounds giving them plenty of chances for extra shots that turned into points. In addition to Clark’s four steals, White County had nine other girls take the ball away from the Tigers for a team total of fifteen steals.
On Nov. 25, it was more of the same from the White County Warriorettes as they extended their record to 5-0 with a 59-43 win over Warren County. White County started out a little slower, scoring just 11 points in the first quarter. However, they held their guests to seven. The Warriorettes picked up the temp just a little in the second quarter, and they took a 28 – 23 lead into halftime. The White County team came out of the locker room ready to shoot and outscored the Pioneers 21-2 in the third frame. With a 49-25 lead to start the final eight minutes of play, White County turned to their bench to get some meaningful game minutes for their younger players. While the Pioneers outscored the Warriorettes by eight in the fourth quarter, it didn’t change the outcome as White County breezed to a 59-43 win to stay undefeated through five games.
Once again, it was Gracie Clark leading the way for the Warriorettes as she netted 20 points and was credited with another five steals. Kylie Norris scored nine points and Bella Winningham had eight. Sarah Winfree scored four points, Kyra Fox Miah Swindell each scored three, Lakelyn Grasty and Taegan Angell had two apiece, and Cassidy Reed sank a solo foul shot to round out the scoring.
On the boards, White County gave themselves plenty of second chances, pulling down 19 offensive rebounds and added another 17 on defense.. Ashlyn Selby led the Warriorettes with 10 rebounds split evenly between offensive and defensive boards.
