Warriorettes headed to District 7AA Championship game

The White County High School soccer team has made school history. For the first time, the Warriorettes are headed to a district championship game.

“I want to change the way White County soccer is viewed,” head coach Madison Mason had said at the beginning of the season, and this year’s team has done just that. With a 8-4-1 overall record, and going 3-2 in district play, the Warriorettes finished the regular season as the district's third seed.

On Monday, in the first round of the district tournament, White County shutout Watertown and took home a 4-0 win. The Warriorettes’ defensive line was solid in the shutout while the offense was on fire. District Freshman of the Year Makayla Sullivan scored two goals while assisting on the other two. Anna Joliff was credited for a pair of assists as well, and it was Kaydence Redmon and senior Amia Heath who found the back of the net for the other two White County scores.

The win set up a rematch with second seeded Cumberland County for Tuesday. During the regular season, the Lady Jets had bested the Warriorettes by a score of 3-1.

“We had a lightning delay during that regular season match, so I am excited to see what a full game will look like against them,” Mason said. “If we attack and pass like we did tonight we should give them a good game.”

On Tuesday night, the Warriorettes did just that, and at the end of regulation play, the score stood tied at one goal apiece.

“It was such a battle all game; the girls played their hearts out and I’m so proud of them,” Mason said.

With it being a tournament and a trip to the championship game on the line, the score could not remain tied, so a shoutout was needed. White County, who has been reinvented as not just a defensive team but also a powerhouse on offense this season, was more than up to the task. The Warriorettes netted five PK’s while the Lady Jets fell just short at four. Four White County it was Amia Heath, Hannah Rabchenia, Katie Blakeman, Makayla Sullivan, and Anna Joliff who found the back of the net during the overtime shoutout to send the Warriorettes to their first ever district championship game.

“They proved tonight how much work they put into their game. They started conditioning in the spring and showed up to practice all summer to work towards wins like these,” Mason explained that the win wasn’t coincidental, instead the result of consistent, focused practice. “I am so proud of these girls and the love they have for the game.”

The Warriorettes will face Livingston Academy, the district's top seeded team, on Thursday night.
