White County High School Warriorettes averaged 63 points per game through the first five games of the season. On Dec. 4, they fell well below that mark when they managed just 44 points against York Institute. However, the Warriorettes stayed undefeated as they played solid defense, allowing the Dragons to put just 36 points on the board.
Both teams came to Roy Sewell Gymnasium ready to play and pushed the pace of the game throughout the first quarter. It was York, however, who took an early lead going up 4-0. It was two-and-a-half minutes into the game before the Warriorettes had a shot go through the hoop, and that was a free throw from junior Ashlyn Selby. Forty seconds later, Gracie Clark sank a pair of free throws to cut the Dragons lead to one. Another 30 seconds and White County took the lead as this time it was Kyra Fox sinking both of her foul shots, while York was getting themselves in early foul trouble, with all five of the Warriorettes’ early points coming from the line.
York regrouped and settled down over the remaining four minutes of the first quarter to take an 11-8 lead by the first buzzer and putting the Warriorettes undefeated status in jeopardy.
White County worked the boards to even the score at 13 halfway through the second quarter, and then it was York gaining the advantage again. The Dragons went up 17-14 and then 19-17 before White County’s offense got moving and tied the score at 21 before the half.
Coming into the second half, it was a new ball game, and White County was fighting to keep their perfect record intact. A minute into the second half and the Dragons broke the tie, but they wouldn’t score again until after the Warriorettes had taken their second lead of the game. White County would hold York to just seven points in the third quarter while they scored 14 to take a 35-28 lead into the final eight minutes of the game.
The Warriorettes held their lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter to take the 44-36 win and remain undefeated. Ashlyn Selby led White County’s scoring attack with 11 points, but Bella Winningham was right behind her with 10. Lakelyn Grasty scored eight points, and Gracie Clark added another seven, while Kyra Fox added a pair of free throws, and Sarah Winfree sank one to round out the Warriorette scoring.
