The White County High School Warriorettes’ matchup with the Monterey Lady Wildcats last March could have gone either way, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for Tuesday’s game. The Warriorettes came up short against the Wildcats, falling 13 to 3.
Abigail Schalk got the game going when she ran out her groundball hit, causing the Wildcats second baseman to rush resulting in an error and Schalk reaching base safely. Schalk continued the hustle on the basepaths as she stole second on the first pitch to Hannah Poteet. The Monterey catcher then dropped a third strike and had to throw Poteet out at first, allowing Schalk to move to third base allowing her to score on a sacrifice fly by Maddie Rust a few pitches later.
The Wild cats responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Haylee Trevathan laid down a bunt and then beat the throw to first. She stole second and then scored when Warriorette left fielder Anna McCulley mishandled a ground ball. Haylee Garthweit then scored on a fly ball to right field to make the score 2-1 in favor of Monterey.
Poppy Shank started the second inning for the Warriorettes with a walk and then advanced to second when Kami Clark hit a pop fly to right field. The Wildcat right fielder mishandled the ball and Clark was safe, putting runners on first and second for Schalk. However, Shank was then picked off second before Schalk could hit a single to advance Clark to third. Clark scored when Poteet singled and the score was even in the middle of the second inning.
Monterey added a run in the bottom of the second and third innings to make it 4-2 before the Warriorettes would score again. In the top of the fourth inning, Clark started White County off by drawing a walk. Schalk battled to stay alive at the plate before driving a deep fly ball to center field for a double that put here on second and Clark on third. Poteet hit another deep ball to center, this time it was caught, but the sacrifice allowed Clark to score, making it 4-3.
The Wildcats would score one in the bottom of the fourth and then hold White County scoreless in the top of the fifth inning before putting up eight more runs to end the game on the ten-run-rule at the end of the fifth inning.
Schalk led the Warriorettes at the plate with two hits, one of them a double, and a run scored. Poteet, Rust, McCulley, Rylee Groce, and Addison Howell all recorded one hit with Rust getting an RBI and Poteet responsible for two runs batted in. While Schalk crossed the plate once, Clark scored the other two White County runs. Schalk, McCulley, Howell, and Jada Wright, who is the courtesy runner for White County, each stole a base.
Mabry Taylor took the loss in the circle giving up 15 hits and 13 runs, although only eight of them were earned. Taylor struck out four while giving up three walks on the night.
