WCHS Warriorettes edge out Stone Memorial

After a pair of tough losses over the spring break week, the White County High School softball team notched a win as they traveled to Stone Memorial, on March 18.

The Warriorettes jumped out to an early lead, bringing a run across the plate in the top of the first inning. It would take the Lady Panthers until the bottom of the second to match that run. In the top of the fourth inning, White County would finally break that tie, plating one more run and then adding another one in the sixth inning to go up 3-1 heading into the final inning.

While the Warriorettes wouldn’t add to their score during their final turn at bat, Stone Memorial did. However, the Lady Panthers were only able to get one runner home before White County recorded three outs to secure a 3-2 victory.

Kylie Norvell, who made her return to the softball field after finishing her basketball season with a trip to the state quarterfinals, notched just one hit but used her speed to reach base twice more while forcing the Lady Panthers to make hurried decisions and errors. Norvell scored two of the Warriorettes three runs while also stealing a base. Abigail Schalk, who walked twice, also stole a base which put her in a prime position to score the Warriorettes other run of the night.

Callie Phillips was the only other Warriorette to record a hit in the March 18 win. Phillips, along with Lakelyn Rice, were credited with RBIs.

Mabry Taylor pitched the complete game for White County giving up five hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Taylor struck out six while walking three.

Despite White County coming away with the win, Stone Memorial’s pitcher, Kenzie Jackson, was still able to get the Warriorettes to strike out 13 times. The difference came in White County’s ability to cut down on errors that had hurt them last week, improve their baserunning, and take advantage of the three errors committed by the Lady Panthers.
