On Wednesday night, the White County Middle School softball team lost to Upperman by a score of 10-1 and fell into the losers’ bracket.

“We didn’t play well, but it’s a double elimination tournament,” head coach Gregg Segraves said, indicating the Warriorettes knew they would have to rebound quickly and correct the mistakes they made on Wednesday.

The Warriorettes bounced back Thursday night with a win over DeKalb who was playing their second game of the day after having eliminated Prescott earlier in the day. White County came out hot with Abbi Hutson and A.K. Wallace both getting base hits. Annie Burrier then blasted an in-the-park homerun to quickly run the score up 3-0. Addison Finley and Bianca Villano also singled in the first inning, but the Warriorettes left two stranded in scoring position.

White County rallied in the third inning with Addison Norvell ripping a single then stealing second base. Addison Finley followed with a walk and then Bianca Villano laid down the perfect bunt to load the bases. With one out and bases loaded, Jordan Wright scorched a double earning two RBIs as both Norvell and flex player Blakelyn Cope scored. Treeah Powell laced a single down the third base line to bring Wright home and put the Warriorettes up 6-0. Coach Segraves aided a baserunner and cost the team another run in the third.

The Saints bounced back and scored 4 in the fourth inning to close the gap and make the score 6-4. But Annie Burrier, despite having been injured earlier in the week, came out in the fifth inning and closed the door as she pitched another complete game. Burrier recorded a career high 12 strikeouts and went over the century mark with 112 strikeouts for the season.

“This was a great team effort,” Segraves said.  “The girls wanted this from the start and played great team ball.”

This was the 20th win of the season for the Warriorettes and moved them into the tournament’s championship game and guaranteed them a spot in the sectionals.
