White County flag football hands Stone Memorial first loss

Posted

White County High School flag football team played a double header April 11, and, while they lost the first game, they rallied to hand the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers their first loss of the year.

In the first game, White County was only able to but 12 points on the scoreboard. Kennedy Billings-Sullivan and CallieAnna Griggs each found the endzone, but the Warriorettes were not able to convert extra points on either attempt. Griggs had five rushes for 106 yards while Billings-Sullivan had two carries for 31 yards. Joining the pair of seniors in rushing yardage was freshman Sarah Kate Winfree, five rushes for 78 yards, and sophomore Quinn Davis, one rush for eight yards.

But the story of the game belonged to the Warriorettes’ defense. White County came into the game giving up less than 14 points a game, and they relied on that strength to hold the Lady Panthers scoreless and hand them their first loss. Griggs had an interception and two tackles. Katie Blakeman led the Warriorettes with three tackles while Breanna Powell and Anita Hartawan had one each.

The Lady Panthers had only allowed a team to score on them twice all year before Friday night, and they weren’t too happy about taking their first loss. In the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, in Crossville, White County found the endzone two more times, both on runs by CallieAnna Griggs who ended the game with 128 yards on seven carries. However, Stone Memorial quickly put 40 points on their side of the scoreboard and ended White County’s winning streak.

After Friday, White County’s record stands at 6-1 while Stone Memorial stands at 10-1.
