The White County High School soccer team is turning some heads around the region this season. On Thursday, they picked up their third district win, putting them precariously in the second seed position. At 3-1 in the district, and 5-1-1 overall, the Warriorettes are putting pressure on the rest of the district to keep pace as some teams are just beginning district play this week.
“I’m so proud of these girls,” White County head coach Madison Mason said. “They are playing together and changing the way people view the Sparta soccer program.”
On Thursday, the Warriorettes traveled to Baxter where they blanked the Upperman Lady Bees by a score of 3-0. The first goal of the match was an own goal by the Bees who tried to defend a corner kick by Warriorette captain Katie Blakeman. The ball bounced off the defender and past the Upperman keeper for a White County goal.
The Warriorettes held possession of the ball for almost the entire game, although Upperman did not make finding the net again an easy task.
“They crammed the middle of the field and were double teaming Makayla during the first half,” Mason said that the Bees were using a strategy that put all ten of their fielders into a defensive scheme. “We adjusted and put her attacking midway through the second period and that got her some shots.”
The result was that Makayla Sulivan scored White County’s other two goals, launching one from 35 yards away from the goal.
Next up for the Warriorettes is a homestand. They will host Smith County in an out-of-conference game on Tuesday before taking on Dekalb County on Thursday in their fifth of six district matchups this season.
