The city of Sparta will celebrate its bluegrass Heritage this Saturday with the annual Liberty Square Lester Flatt Celebration.

While there will be plenty of vendors, food, and entertainment – much of which will center around the sound of bluegrass – American Legion Post #99 will also be on hand to celebrate military veterans throughout White County.

The American Legion Building, located on the city’s square, adjacent to the entertainment stage, will be open to the public. Members of Post # 99 will be selling hot dogs, chips, beef stix, and drinks while they share information about their mission and upcoming community events.

Post #99 sponsors a variety of veterans’ outreach programs, including a food bank, clothing, toiletries, and other essentials for homeless or in-need veterans. But their reach goes beyond just those who have served. Their mission includes education for the youth in the community. They are proud to sponsor students from White County who are chosen to attend the Governor’s Boys State program each year as well as to teach a flag etiquette program for area elementary schools.

American Legion Post #99 meets at 4 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month, in the Legion Building. The organization serves as a community of support for veterans as well as a way for those same veterans to support the White County community. Members believe their service to fellow citizens did not expire when their terms of service did. Instead, they aim to be involved members of their community as they find new ways to serve and to help not only each other but future generations of leaders as well.

Post Commander Ron Lapierre encourages anyone taking part in the Liberty Square Celebration, on Saturday, to pay a quick visit to the front lawn of the American Legion Building, or step inside and see the Veterans Museum and learn more about the veterans of White County.
