Athlete of the Week-CalliAnna Griggs

CallieAnna Griggs, a 2025 White County High School graduate, never thought a sport she watched her brothers play would be how she punched her ticket to college. Griggs always thought it would be volleyball, or even softball or track, that would be the sport she would play after high school, but instead it was flag football – something she was doing just for fun.

“My dad traveled around the world playing rugby, and my brothers played football, so I grew up around it,” she explained, saying that her family’s athletic background inspired her to give the sport a try. “I started playing flag football because I thought it looked like a fun way to be active and hang out with friends. I never imagined it could lead to college or become a serious pursuit.”

Griggs’s enthusiasm and talent quickly became evident. As a versatile player, she took on multiple roles, including quarterback, running back, and defensive back during her time as a Warriorette. Her adaptability and leadership on the field helped grow the sport in White County. Griggs was a member of the Warriorette Flag Football team right from its inception in Spring 2024 and continued to play her senior season as flag football became an official TSSAA sanctioned sport.

Griggs’ impact extends beyond the field as she says she hopes that she is inspiring younger girls in the community to consider flag football as a viable sport.

“I want to help grow the sport here at White County and show other girls that they can pursue college opportunities in flag football,” she said. “It’s a sport that can really add to your high school experience and create lifelong friendships.”

The significance of her signing was not lost on her, as she reflected on her plans for college. Griggs will attend Cumberland University, where she her flag football scholarship will help her pursue a future in early childhood education. She hopes to continue fostering her passion for helping young children while excelling on the football field.

Looking back, Griggs credits her supportive family and coaches for her success.

“My parents have been incredibly supportive, and every coach I’ve had has contributed to my growth as an athlete and a person,” she said.

Her story is not just one of personal determination but also a guide for future female athletes at White County High, paving the way for more young women to chase their dreams in collegiate sports.
