On June 8, 2024, the Rock House Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted the Sequoyah District Flag Day Luncheon in the banquet room, at First National Bank, in Sparta.
DAR chapters from around the district were in attendance. Regent Pamela Wood welcomed everyone. White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson brought greetings. The Star Spangled Banner was sung by chapter member Susan Hinton after the pledges to the US Flag and Tennessee State Flag.
A Memorial Service was conducted to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. The program included some information regarding D-Day and a table for “Fallen Comrades,” honoring veterans who paid the ultimate price and never returned home. The table is our way of symbolizing the fact that our veterans are missing from our midst. They are known as prisoners of war, missing in action, and killed in action. The small table, set for one, represents the frailty of life for each of us. The tablecloth is black and white. The white represents the purity of their intentions to serve. The black represents our mourning for our fallen veterans. The single rose and single candle remind us of the families and loved ones of our veterans who keep the faith, awaiting their return. The sword and gloves remind us of - and are symbolic of - their profession of arms. A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of their bitter fate. Salt spilled on the plate, symbolic of the families’ tears as they wait for word. An inverted wine glass represents the toast our fallen veterans cannot make with us today. The empty chair remains vacant for our missing veterans.
Miss Marenda’s Tea Room catered lunch. Entertainment was provided by the musical trio “Three Parts Grace” from Smithville. They sung several patriotic songs in addition to “How Great Thou Art.” Their program was ended by all in attendance standing and singing “God Bless America.” A silent auction was held to raise funds for a memorial marker commemorating the 250th Birthday of our country to be placed somewhere in the Sequoyah District yet to be determined. Over $1,000 was raised from the event. The luncheon ended with a benediction and the American’s Creed.
