Hannah “Ann” Gay Choate, 90, of Smyrna, formerly of Sparta, passed away June 4, 2024, at her residence.

Mrs. Choate was the last surviving child of the 10 children born to Hargis and Eva Rice Gay.

She was born March 22, 1934, in Bowlingtown, Kentucky.  She met her husband, Sampson, in Dayton, Ohio, and they were married for 44 years.  She was a homemaker and loved that role to the fullest extent. She never met a stranger, and anyone that came to visit always had to eat and, hopefully, it was her biscuits, gravy, and fried chicken. She enjoyed gardening and canning from her garden, reading, and traveling. She will always be remembered for being lighthearted but direct and a proud mother and granny.

In addition to her parents and nine siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sampson A.L. Choate; son, Sam “Buzz” Choate Jr.; and grandson-in-law, Jake Morris

She is survived by her children, Thomas Choate, Larry (Thressa) Choate, Cathy (Earl) Barnes, Russell (B.J.) Choate; stepson, Sam (Joyce) Gardner; grandchildren, Latessa Morris, Sampson (Megan) Choate, Landon Barnes, Mandy Barnes; great-grandchildren, Aidan Nicol, Connor Nicol, Mark Morris, Mylee Morris, Levi Choate, Bo Choate; and numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral service was noon, June 7, 2024, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Cookeville City Cemetery. Randall Kirby officiated.
