A fatal incident that was a reported hit and run has left a White County man dead.
According to a report from Tennessee Highway Patrol, Gary Humphrey Jr. 56, of Sparta, was reportedly walking on the northbound shoulder of Old Kentucky Highway, on the morning of Sept. 3, 2025, when a 2018 Dodge Journey, traveling north on Old Kentucky Highway and driven by Charles V. Anderson Jr., 18, reportedly struck Humphrey.
According to Sheriff Steve Page, Anderson reportedly did not stop and continued driving to White County High School.
When Humphrey did not return home from his walk, his mother called White County Sheriff’s Office who found him around 9:45 a.m.
According to Sheriff Page, Anderson was arrested at the high school on the charge of leaving an accident scene involving death. He was booked into White County Jail in the afternoon of Sept. 3. He reportedly made bond and was released Sept. 4.
Sheriff Page said it was a “tragic, sad accident,” but he also wanted to stress: “Anytime you have an accident, think you have an accident, stop, and make sure everyone is OK. Make sure nobody is hurt.”
