White County High School is celebrating a major milestone for its female student-athletes as Kennedy Billings-Sullivan signed her National Letter of Intent to play college flag football.
The Warriorettes’ flag football program is still in its infancy, having only been in existence for two years. Despite its young age, there are now two Warriorettes headed to Cumberland University to be a part of the school’s inaugural flag football team. Billings-Sullivan will join teammate CallieAnna Griggs, who signed her NLI last month, as a Phoenix next year.
For Billings-Sullivan, the fact that she’s playing football has come somewhat as a surprise for the Warriorette who spent most of her high school time playing volleyball and basketball and running track. Flag football is something she has only been playing for a few months.
“You know, I’ve always kind of grown up around football. My cousins played in high school, and then I started playing powder puff in high school. I really enjoyed it,” she said. “When my senior year came around, I decided to give it a shot. I’m glad I did.”
For Billings-Sullivan, the opportunity to continue to play a sport she has quickly fallen in love with while getting the education she is wanting for her future is the best of both worlds. She will use her scholarship to help offset the costs of getting a nursing degree as she pursues her goal of becoming a neonatal nurse.
Billings-Sullivan’s signing highlights not only her personal achievement but also the promising future of girls’ flag football at WCHS. As the program continues to grow, her journey serves as an inspiring example for other athletes eager to pursue their passions and open new doors through this exciting sport.
“We are so excited for the opportunities this emerging sport is presenting our female student-athletes. We are also very grateful for Coach Steven Miller at Cumberland University and his partnership with our program,” Warriorette head coach Roger Mason said. “We are excited for Kennedy and her future at Cumberland and look forward to the great things she will do there.”
