September was another busy month for the White County Humane Society. We funded a total of 125 spay/neuter surgeries for pet owners who needed some assistance with the cost of surgery or who had taken in a stray dog or cat and given them a forever home. Fifty-eight dogs or cats made the trip to Lebanon or Dunlap onboard our twice-monthly transports, sixty-two were fixed at the Major Mike Shipley Clinic in Cookeville, and an additional five were taken to private veterinary clinics. Our total for the year is 994. We’re well on our way to meeting our goal of 1,200 surgeries in 2026.
We get lots of calls from cat owners asking for help getting their cats and kittens fixed. But we’re disappointed in the small number of dog owners that participate in our program. Please…if you own a dog and cannot afford the cost of having him/her fixed, give us a call. If a stray dog shows up at your home and you decide to keep him/her…give us a call. The shelter is full, and there are not enough good homes for the dogs that end up there. Do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted/unplanned puppies that will end up in the shelter.
Unfortunately, like many others, we made the hard decision not to set up a booth at the Liberty Square Celebration this year. We showed up Friday afternoon to set up, but after hearing the weather predictions for Saturday and seeing how few other vendors had shown up, we decided to cancel. We pray that those sponsoring food booths have the opportunity to sell their goods. It was disappointing for us, but we feel especially bad for those food vendors.
The Williamson County Spay/Neuter Coalition has offered us a $1,000 matching grant. If we can raise the money by December 31, they will match it dollar for dollar. If you would like to contribute to this cause, checks can be mailed to the White County Humane Society, PO Box 194, Sparta, TN 38583. As always, 100% of the funds raised will be used to help defray the cost of spay/neuter surgeries.
Our aluminum can collection program is going great. In September, we raised $372 from the sale of cans that had been donated. We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributes to this fundraiser and thank you for taking the time to participate. Once more, we’d like to remind you we cannot accept tin, glass, plastic, etc. These items must be removed before taking the aluminum to be recycled. It’s time-consuming and not a pleasant job. Please, aluminum only. Several brands of cat food come in aluminum cans, and we welcome those donations.
The White County Humane Society meets at 3 pm the second Monday of the month at the White County Library. We’re always looking for new members and would welcome anyone who wants to make a difference in improving the lives of cats and dogs in White County.
If you need assistance having your pet spayed or neutered, please call 931-935-8377. If no one answers, leave your name and number. We make every attempt to get back to you within 24 hours.
