Richardson listed as fatality in January 25 crash

A beloved White County man who has been at the center of the sports community for several decades lost his life in a head-on collision last week.

According to a report from Tennessee Highway Patrol, Bruce Richardson, 64, was traveling south on Roberts-Matthews Highway, in Sparta, on Jan. 25, 2024, in a 1994 Toyota Tacoma.

Michael A. Gooden, 19, was traveling northbound, driving a 2005 Chevy Silverado, when he reportedly crossed the center line and struck Richardson’s vehicle head-on.

Matthew T. Gooden, 20, was a passenger in the 2005 Chevy Silverado. According to the report, Michael Gooden and Matthew Gooden both were injured.

The reported stated Richardson was not wearing a seatbelt. Michael Gooden and Matthew Gooden were both wearing seatbelts.

According to the report, pending the outcome of an investigation, charges may be filed against the driver of the 2005 Chevy Silverado.
