Posted

The June 2 meeting of Sparta  Board of Mayor and Aldermen had a full agenda but did not garner much discussion as all aldermen were in agreement on each of the agenda’s items.

The board unanimously passed three ordinances, all of which had to do with the budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Ordinance 22-946, which was presented after a Public Hearing, was making and fixing the annual appropriations of the several departments of the city for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023. With it being the second and final reading for the ordinance, and with it receiving unanimous approval from the board, the departments budgets were set.

Another Public Hearing was held and then Ordinance 22-947, which provides for the general revenue for the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 to be known as the General Revenue Ordinance, was approved. This was the second and final reading for this ordinance as well.

A first reading was held on the third ordinance, Ordinance 22-948 - An Ordinance of the City of Sparta, Tennessee to amend the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 Operating Budget that was adopted by Ordinance 21-939, was also held and approved by the board. A second reading will have to be heard at a future meeting.

Besides the budget ordinances, the board also made a purchasing decision when they approved an emergency HVAC repair at City Hall from CHC in the amount of $11,727.66. One final item for the board to vote on, which they also unanimously approved, was the location change certificate of compliance for retail package store for Pintubhai Patel.

During the portion of the meeting set aside for each of the city’s department managers to update the board on the daily operations of the city, the Codes department informed the board that Rockin’ Smiles Dental, on Bockman Way, is nearing completion of their build and has plans to host a Grand Opening on July 5. It was also reported that Murphy Oil, Taco Bell, and Tractor Supply Company are moving along as planned on their builds.

All of the other departments across the city reported business as usual, with the electric and street departments discussing the emergency repair of the 3-phase underground service at the White County Courthouse. The street department extended their thanks to several workers, listed as Gideon, Trevor, Zack, Jackie, Stacy, and Pierre for giving up their holiday weekend to help with the breaking and re-pouring of the concrete as well as clean up and traffic control.

The next meeting of Sparta’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen is scheduled for 5 p.m., June 16, at Sparta City Hall.
