Sparta GFWC donates items to teachers

Posted

The Sparta Tennessee GFWC (General Federation of Woman’s Clubs) had the pleasure of presenting two checks to two teachers at the beginning of the school year.

Kaye Barlow and Sherry Hickey are co-chairs for the Education and Libraries community service program.  The program earned the money (nearly $400 total) by having a table at a couple of Green Markets.  They sold t-shirts and jewelry, which were made and donated by members, plants that were grown by a potential member, cookies and banana breads, which were baked by several members and potential members, and we had a huge basket filled with many different items that was donated.  That basket was bought, through a silent auction, by Evan Stafford, ENT, of Cookeville.

At the beginning of the year, we have recommendations to give financially to a couple of new teachers.  We like to help these teachers out with buying their supplies as we know how keeping the classroom supplied is very difficult, not to mention expensive.

In addition, we also gave the principals of each of those schools a backpack filled with all kinds of pencils, rulers, erasers, art supplies, etc.  This is for those kids who need help with getting their standard school items.

At Woodland Park Elementary School, a second-grade teacher by the name of Natalie Schuch, accepted her check and also accepted the backpack on behalf of the principal. At Doyle Elementary School, Breanna Hall Lesko, a kindergarten teacher received her check and the school principal, Mrs. Johnson, accepted the backpack.

Joining the presentation at both Woodland Park and Doyle Elementary was the Supported Learning Supervisor for the new teachers, Farrah Griffith.
