Tripp Pinion was unstoppable, on Feb. 7. The White County High School senior went 16 of 25 from the floor on his way to 41 points as he led the WCHS Warriors to their fourth straight win and improved their district record to 4-4.
Pinion got things started right from the beginning, netting his first 2 points of the night just 16 seconds into the game, and he, and the Warriors, never looked back. When the first quarter came to an end, the Warriors were up 19-9 with Pinion scoring 12 of those points. Double-digit scoring isn’t anything new for the Warriors #3, however, as the fewest points he’s scored in a game this season was 10. But Pinion was going to score 10 or more points in each of the first three quarters Friday night and come just a basket shy of making it all four.
Pinion had his slowest 8 minutes of the game in the second quarter as he scored just 10 points to help put the Warriors up 34-23 over the Cumberland County Jets at halftime. Eleven more points in the third quarter and Pinion was at 33 points with just eight minutes left to play. Pinion scored 8 in the next six-and-half minutes before Coach Eric Mitchell subbed him out as one of the last starters left in the game.
Pinion’s efficiency score was an amazing 37 as he sank 64 percent of his field goals and 66.7 percent of his free throws. He led the Warriors in rebounds as well as he grabbed seven defensive boards and added a pair of steals to his stat line.
Other Warriors putting points on the board included Gage Stephenson and Nate Griffin who each hit a pair of 3-pointers on their way to 8 and 7 points respectively. Keaun Lewis added 6 points, and Michael Arcia-Davis netted 5. Tucker Pinion only shot the ball three times all night, sinking a single shot from beyond the arc and then added a free throw for a total of 4 points while Cole Sims was perfect from the line, but only had two attempts.
Overall, the Warriors took 53 shots at the goal from the field, and 25 of those belonged to Tripp Pinion. Just under half of White County’s free throws were taken by Tripp Pinion as well as he attempted 12 (making 8) of the Warriors’ 25 foul shots. For all the shots he took on goal, Tripp Pinion also led the team in assists, making sure he shared the ball when and where he could. keep shooting.
Rebounds were a little more even for White County. While Tripp Pinion had seven, Gage Stephenson had six, and three other Warriors – Sims, Lewis, and Arcia-Davis – had four apiece. Griffin and Tucker Pinion each grabbed one board as well.
The Warriors’ win puts them at 4-4 in district play. White County will host the Upperman Bees, on Feb. 11. Despite a slow start to their season, and then a 1-4 start in the portion of their schedule, the Warriors now have a chance to be .500 or better in district play at the end of the regular season.
