Warriorettes defeat Stone on the softball diamond

After last year’s phenomenal season for the Warriorettes the team came into this season with high expectations. The season this year has gotten off to a slower start than what Coach Jerry Roberts would have hoped. On Thursday, March 30, the ladies from Sparta welcomed the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers to Glenn “Buckshot” Sims Field for an important district matchup. There was determination evident on the Warriorettes’ faces even as they were warming up.

Savannah Barr would take the mound for the Warriorettes.  She was supported by a great defense behind her, which held Stone Memorial scoreless for the first four innings of the ballgame. Barr pitched a great game. She struck out three batters in the second inning alone. She would strike out nine batters on the evening. Savannah really excelled in the sixth and seventh innings where she struck out 5 of the last 6 batters she faced.

Kylie Norvell started the game off with a walk and a stolen base.  Taylor Roberts crushed a double deep into the outfield to bring Norvell around to score, giving the Warriorettes the early 1-0 lead.  The home team would increase their lead in the third inning. Ashlyn Rohlander bunted her way on base, then Norvell used her speed to leg out a double. These hits were followed by a solid single by Ryleigh Burchett which plated a run. Abby Guy put the ball in play and a second run scored in the inning. The Warriorettes led 3-0 after three innings. The Lady Panthers got on the board in the fifth inning. Two singles and a double led to two runs for the visitors. Barr went to work shutting down the Lady Panthers after that. The Warriorettes would add another run on a double by Maddie Rust in the sixth inning. The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Warriorettes.

Coach Roberts said of the game, “It was good to get a district win. This team can be good, we just have to get our confidence back. Tonight was a great start against a good Stone Memorial team”.
