Several of the top girls’ high school soccer programs in central Tennessee will be participating in the Crossville Chronicle 1886 Soccer Classic Aug. 3 at the Duer Soccer Complex.

The six-team tournament, sponsored by the Crossville Chronicle, will be played in a round-robin format with teams being seeded heading into the elimination portion of the contest.

“Every team looks for an opportunity to play as many matches as possible prior to the start of the regular season,” said Cumberland County coach Cub Whitson. “We’ve turned this play day into a tournament setting with each team playing at least three matches in one day.”

“Events like this give us a chance to play a lot of matches in one day against some very good competition,” said first-year Stone Memorial coach Madison Buffkin. “We’re excited about being part of it.”

Besides Cumberland County and Stone Memorial, the field will include Harriman, Bledsoe County, White County and Jackson County.

“One of the foundations of the Crossville Chronicle is being a vital part of our local community as the leading professional news source since 1886. That is in the forefront of everything we do,” said Bill Atkinson, publisher of the Crossville Chronicle and the Glade Sun.

“When we had the opportunity to work together with two strong soccer programs like CCHS and Stone Memorial to put on this tournament, we quickly said, yes! It should be a great day for some quality soccer.”

CCHS will be in a bracket with White County and Harriman, while Stone Memorial will play Jackson County and Bledsoe County. Matches will be 40 minutes long.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m. with Cumberland County playing Harriman and Stone taking on Bledsoe County. The 10 a.m. matches will see White County and Harriman battling each other, and Jackson taking on Bledsoe County.

The final round-robin matches will be at 11 a.m. with White County playing CCHS and Jackson County taking on Stone Memorial.

Then, the No. 3 seeds will play each other at noon, as will the second-seeded teams in each bracket.

The No. 1 seeds from each bracket will play in the title match at 1 p.m.

All of the money raised at the gate will go to benefit Cumberland County and Stone Memorial soccer programs.
