The White County Warriorettes were crowned District 7AAA Tournament Champions, on Feb. 24, after they secured a 32-26 win over the Upperman Bees. The win gave White County their second straight Dis-trict Tournament Championship to go along with this year’s season championship and set them up to host a regional game, on Feb. 28.
Senior Ava Jones led the team as she went three-for-three from behind the arc to propel her to 11 points, while Lakelyn Grasty had 8. Gracie Clark netted 6, Kyra Fox scored 5, and Bella Winningham rounded out the scoring for the Warriorettes with 2 points. While White County scored on a dangerously low 24 adjust field goal percentage, it was their discipline at the free throw line that won them their second champion-ship in as many years.
The Warriorettes didn’t miss a single foul shot, taking advantage of eve-ry opportunity Upperman gave them. They scored exactly half of their points from the free throw line, with Grasty leading the way with 6 points. Clark sank all four of her free throws, while the other three White County starters contributed with a pair each. Without the 16 points from the line, the Warriorettes would not have been on the better side of the scoreboard.
White County’s discipline was also apparent on defense as they pulled down 16 defensive boards, with Clark snagging 6 and Fox grabbing 3. Grasty, Clark, and Jones each pulled down two defensive boards while Winningham had a single defensive rebound Monday night.
White County only committed five turnovers in what was their lowest scoring game of the season, proof that discipline on the court and attention to the fundamentals can win a championship. While their shooting wasn’t their usual, and they didn’t put up 50-plus points, only netting 25 percent of their 3-pointers and 11 percent of their field goals, the Warriorettes found a way to win. Along with the win, Warriorette Lakelyn Grasty was named the District 7AAA Tournament MVP.
