Warriors take down Cannon County Lions on the road

 On Oct. 2, the White County High School Warriors were set to have a week off for their scheduled bye week.  The teams were set to play the first game of the season, but the COVID-19 issues had cancelled the game.  Cannon County and the Warriors agreed, on Tuesday, to play the game, on Oct 2.  With a short week of practice the Warriors, traveled to Woodbury and took care of business, with a strong win over the Lions by a score of 41-21. 

Cannon County took the opening kickoff and was driving until a Lion fumble was recovered by the Warriors’ Kyle Erickson that stopped the drive.  Cannon County held the Warriors and took over in Warrior territory after a mishap on the long snap to the punter. It took Cannon just three plays to score on an 18-yard run and take an early lead 7-0, with 6:07 in the first quarter.

After the kickoff, the Warriors’ freshman quarterback, Owen Adams, handed off to D.J. Paul who weaved his way into the endzone with a 45 yard touchdown run.  Dawson Stewart added the extra point to tie the score at seven, with 4:49 left to play in the first quarter.  The Warrior defense forced another fumble, and Ethan Light recovered the fumble to give the Warriors a short field to work with.  Three plays later, Hunter Pope battled his way into the endzone for a touchdown that gave the Warriors the lead.  Stewart’s extra point set the score at 14-7 in favor of White County at the 2:46 mark in the first quarter.  The Warriors added to their lead at the 5:01 mark in the second quarter with a Pope 11-yard touchdown run.  The Warriors continued to stop the Cannon County offense, and, with one minute to go in the first half, Javen Strode caught the pass from Adams and sprinted his way 53 yards to paydirt to make the score 28-7 at the half.  The Warriors added another touchdown with a Caleb Bailey four-yard run, with 9:34 to play in the third quarter.  Bailey’s run gave the Warriors a 35-7 lead. 

Cannon County scored, closing the gap when, on the kickoff, Nate Mullins took the kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown.  This gave the Warriors a 41-14 lead.  Cannon County added a late score, and the final score ended with the Warriors taking the win 41-21.

D.J. Paul led the Warriors rushing with seven carries for 78 yards.  Owen Adams rushed five times for 44 yards.  Hunter Pope rushed five times for 43 yards.  Caleb Bailey rushed four times for 24 yards, and Nate Mullins rushed five times for 23 yards.  Ethan Light ran one time for 10 yards.  Owen Adams completed four passes for 74 yards.  The Warriors had 227 yards rushing and 74 yards passing for a 301-yard offensive output.  The Warriors held the Cannon County Lions to 142 yards on the ground and 34 yards passing for a total of 176 yards.  

The Warriors move to 3-3 on the season.  The next game for the Warriors is Oct. 9 as the Livingston Wildcats make their way down Highway 111 to take the field against the Warriors for homecoming.  Kickoff time is set for 7 p.m.
