WCMS softball finishes season 9-1 in district play

After dropping the first game of the week to Livingston, the White County Middle School softball team finished the regular season on a high note, beating both Monterey and Prescott to finish 9-1 in district play.

“They definitely have one of the best pitchers in the area,” Warriorette coach Gregg Segraves said about the Livingston softball team and added that playing good teams and facing good pitching is what will make the White County team better in the long run. “I thought our girls battled to stay in the game, but some tough calls that didn’t go our way opened up the game in the fourth.”

The Warriorettes rebounded from the 7-2 loss with a 12-0 win over Monterey on Wednesday. Kami Clark pitched a no hitter while striking out 5 Monterey batters. The 10 runs in the second inning helped the Warriorettes to put the game away in just three innings. Clark also led the way at the plate going 2 for 2, scoring 2 runs, and recording an RBI. AK Wallace also had two hits and two runs scored while Annie Burrier, GG Tankersley, Mallori Swindell, and Abbi Hutson each had a hit. Burrier and Swindell had two RBI’s while Tankersley had another.

“Our defense is starting to play much better, which is what we need going into the district tournament,” Segraves said. “I am so proud of Kami for pitching such a great game.

The White County team was able to add another win, on May 2, when they defeated the team from Prescott Middle School 9 – 5.

After giving up 2 runs to start the game, the Warriorettes came back and tied up with a lead off hit by Clark and some good baserunning by Wallace and Burrier. The Warriorettes got a big boost in the 3rd inning when GG Tankersley hit a 2-run homerun to put White County up 5-2.  Prescott came back in the 4th and scored 2 more runs to bring the score to 5-4. Abbi Hutson gave us a big boost with a lead off, In the park homerun to increase the lead to 6-4.  Our next 4 hitters, Kami Clark, AK Wallace, Annie Burrier, and Anna McCulley all hit line drive singles to increase the lead to 9-4.

Overall, White County scored 9 runs on 9 hits while Burrier, who struck out eight batters while only giving up 2 earned runs, was credited with the win in the circle.

“Good teams always respond with a big inning after giving up a couple of runs,” Segraves said about the Warriorettes’ response in their half of the fourth. “We hit the ball extremely well and Annie Burrier pitched a great game.  This was a big win on 8th grade night.”
