White County Middle School’s baseball team showcased not only their athletic skills, but also their determination and resilience, on March 17, securing a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Coffee County.
The game was exciting right from the beginning as Brennan Burchett launched a leadoff homerun, setting the tone for the Warriors. Burchett’s blast not only gave White County the early lead, but it set the tone for the eighth grader’s outstanding performance of the day as he contributed 2 hits and 1 RBI to the team’s score.
While both teams added to the scoreboard, the Warriors clung to the lead Burchett had set early on. But the game took a tense turn in the top of the 7th inning when Coffee County rallied to score 2 runs, taking a brief lead. However, the Warriors refused to back down. In a dramatic bottom of the 7th, they responded by scoring 2 runs. Ryder Staggs delivered the decisive blow with a walk-off single, giving White County their fifth win of the season.
Evan Nicholas also shone brightly at the plate, racking up 3 hits, including a double and driving in 2 runs. Ryder Staggs and Clay Brewington each added 2 hits, with Staggs also bringing home 1 RBI and Brewington showcasing his speed with 4 stolen bases. Other Warriors who joined the offensive onslaught included Maddux Yott, Mason Seibers, and Jack Dicus, each notching a hit, while Casen Goodwin added another RBI.
On the mound, the Warriors were led by a solid performance from Clay Brewington, who pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 2 batters. Mason Seibers, the winning pitcher, stepped in for 2.2 innings, surrendering 2 runs while striking out 5 batters.
