The White County High School Warriors spent spring break playing baseball near the beach, in Gulf Shores, Alabama, but, on March 17, they were back in the Upper Cumberland where they took a commanding 7-1 win over DeKalb County.
The Warriors got right down to business putting six runs up on the board in the bottom of the first inning. They would add another run in the third before allowing the Tigers to let just one runner cross the plate in the top of the sixth.
Trenton Wilson pitched the complete game, surrendering just five hits while striking out seven. Wilson didn’t walk a single batter, and it made his third consecutive appearance on the mound in which he has walked less than two batters.
At the plate, Kolt Norris went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a double. Cole Gentry had a pair of RBIs and hit a triple. The other RBIs went to Griffin Adams and Eli Smith, who went two-for-three at the plate. Will Thomas got the other hit, a double, for the Warriors while Smith and Gage Walker, who drew a walk, each stole a base.
Things weren’t as easy on March 18, however, and the Warriors dropped a close game to the Tigers. White County got out to a 4-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings but then, DeKalb County, who was hosting the second game of the double header, scored 5 in the bottom of the third inning. The Warriors tied things back up in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers responded with a run of their own, and after two more scoreless innings that’s how the game would end.
Austin Pionke and Gage Walker each hit a double while Cole Gentry went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and Will Thomas singled making five total hits for the Warriors over the seven innings. While hits weren’t coming in bunches, on March 18, the Warriors did work the DeKalb County pitchers into giving up four walks and then made the most of their time on the basepaths. White County recorded seven stolen bases with two of those coming from Cole Gentry.
On the mound, Adams took the loss giving up just one earned run while walking three and striking out four. The other five Tiger runs crossed the plate while Pionke was on the mound, however, all of them were unearned.
