YMCA and Bushido Karate partner to empower women

Self-defense classes for women have become more and more popular in recent years as a way for women to feel safer and more prepared to fend off violent attacks, and the Sparta-White County YMCA has partnered with Bushido Karate Center to provide a course to empower women in White County with the skills and knowledge to keep themselves safer.

Studies by the University of Oregon show that the impact of participating in a self-defense class can be exceptionally meaningful for women and teens. The statistics from the study show that taking a self-defense course can not only make a woman feel safer during an attack but also make her feel more confident and comfortable in her daily life, giving her more freedom as she goes about tasks such as shopping, working out, and providing for her family.

The staff at Sparta-White County YMCA and Bushido Karate Center believe that self-defense for women is very important. They make the claim that is not enough for women to avoid walking alone or get an escort to their vehicles when they are out after dark. Instead, they believe that women must have the tools and knowledge to defend themselves at a moment’s notice as they will often be put these situations with attackers that they know and might not expect.

Taking a self-defense course is a great way for women to fight back against the sexual and physical violence that has become so prevalent today. Therefore, the Sparta-White County YMCA has partnered with Bushido Karate Center to offer a community-wide Self-Defense class for women and middle and high school girls beginning at 9 a.m., Nov. 19. For more information, or to enroll, contact the YMCA at (931) 836-3330.
