WCMS basketball teams sweep DeKalb County Saints

 On Oct. 25, the White County Middle School Warriors and Warriorettes made their way to Smithville to get the 2022 season underway.  The teams from Sparta came away with four victories on the night.  There were moments that looked like the teams were in mid-season form.  There were other times that you could tell that it was a first game.

The junior varsity Warriorettes started off the night by taking on the young Lady Saints. The young ladies from Sparta took the lead early and never looked back. The defense played by the Warriorettes was stellar.  The Warriorettes kept the Lady Saints from scoring in the first half.  The score at halftime was 27-0.  The second half looked much like the first as the Warriorettes cruised to a 45-7 victory.

The next teams to hit the court were the junior varsity Warriors and junior varsity Saints.  The Warriors took advantage of a size advantage by getting the ball to their big man, Noah Berringer. The halftime score looked like a football score as the Warriors led 14-6.  The Warriors stretched their lead in the second half with good defensive play. The final score of the game was 21-10 in favor of the Warriors.

The varsity Warriorettes came out ready to start the season on a high note. They started in high gear and never looked back.  Their defense was phenomenal.  They rebounded the ball great the entire game.  White County jumped out to a 33-12 lead at halftime.  The Warriorettes would build the lead throughout the second half. The final score was 59-19.  The Lady Saints had no answer for Ashlyn Selby who had 28 points on the night. Seven other ladies scored for the Warriorettes. It really was a great start for Marsha Jackson’s team.

Coach Mark Sims’ Warriors took the court for the final game of the night.  The Warriors played hard from the opening tip.  It seemed for a while like there was a lid on the rim because shots that normally went in were bouncing out.  Tucker Pinion and Cole Sims both finally found some success driving the ball to the hoop. Jack Carpenter hit a big 3.  The Warriors fought through their shooting frustrations and led 19-9 at halftime.  The Warriors consistently grew their lead in the second half until coach Sims emptied his bench in the fourth quarter, allowing the Saints who kept in their starters to make a run. The final score on the night was 35-25 in favor of the Warriors. 

Tucker Pinion led the team in scoring with 13 points. Cole Sims added 9, and Jack Carpenter had 7.  Eli Smith also got on the scoreboard with 4 points.
