The White County Middle School Warriorettes faced off against the Upperman Lady Jackets, on May 9, 2022, in the Upper Cumberland Conference Championship. The game started the week before but was suspended after two and a half innings of play due to rain and was resumed on May 9.

The Warriorettes came into the championship the number-one seed, with only one conference loss in the regular season. That loss was to Upperman. The Warriorettes went into the championship game having scored 116 runs, run-ruling in six different games.

While the Warriorettes’ bats were hot, Upperman played a good defensive game and held White County to only three runs. Addison Howell would score two of those three runs, and the other run would come from Jada Wright who courtesy runs for Callie Phillips. Kylie Norvell would also help the Warriorettes offensively as she would get a triple in the first inning and would hit Howell in to score in the third.

Rylee Groce and Phillips would also get a single in the third inning. The strength of the Warriorettes would come from their defense with an outstanding performance by their pitcher, Mabry Taylor. Taylor would hold Upperman to only one run and record seven strikeouts. The Warriorettes would back up their pitcher with great plays from the defense.

Groce would eliminate Upperman’s chance of scoring another run by making a great catch in center field. Norvell would make multiple outs from the shortstop position. Howell would make an inning-ending tagout on third with the help of Groce and Norvell. Miah Jo Swindell would help get an out on second.

The Warriorettes were near perfect on defense. The Warriorettes were able to defeat Upperman 3-1 after a hard-fought seven innings.

The White County coaches were able to choose four players for the all-tournament team. Those four players were Mabry Taylor (8th grade pitcher), Kylie Norvell (8th grade shortstop/pitcher), Callie Phillips (8th grade catcher), and Addison Howell (8th grade third baseman/pitcher).

This is the first time that the WCMS Warriorettes have won a conference championship. The Warriorettes will host the sectional round at 3 p.m., May 14 at 3:00. The team they will be playing has not been determined yet.
